Let the good times roll
My niece has been singing and performing for close to a decade, and recently we’ve gotten together for marketing images. I’ve been dying to catch her during a performance, so when she invited me to Denton, TX for a show at Harvest House, I said “hell yeah!”
Nearly twenty years ago, I would photograph for my community college, focusing on the Arts. I loved shooting the steel drum band, the dance performances, plays and so much more. It was something that came naturally for me.
Roy & I took the roadtrip from Tulsa to Denton, enjoying some tasty BBQ along the way. I ventured out to Harvest House later that evening. It’s a quaint venue with multiple areas to chill and a standing bar. After choosing my starting lens - a 16mm fixed with a lovely f1.4 - I grabbed a club soda and headed outside to the stage to find Tomi Jean.
She and her band took the stage shortly after 10pm, and I reveled in every moment I was able to capture - - from the joyful pop moments to the painful, hold your heart moments - - all in one set. I love music, and it’s always on in our household. Being able to feel music while photographing is an incredible feeling. My body feels truly in rhythm in those moments.
I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to capture these images and remind myself what photographing live events feels like. Ready for the next one!
